How this calculator works
Set the years to the goal and drag through time. The chart shows a glide path: more equity when the goal is far, more debt as it nears, so a market fall in the last years does not derail the goal. It is a framework, not a prescription; the actual mix depends on your risk comfort.
What is an asset allocation calculator?
It shows how the equity and debt mix of a portfolio can shift as a goal gets closer, year by year. A goal far away can hold more equity for growth; as the date nears, the mix moves towards debt and hybrid funds so a market fall in the last years does not derail it. This moving mix is called a glide path.
How the glide path works
- 01More than ten years out, equity can carry most of the portfolio: there is time to recover from a fall.
- 02Between ten and five years, the equity share steps down each year and debt and hybrid funds take its place.
- 03In the last three years, most of the goal sits in debt and liquid funds, so the amount on the date is close to certain.
Questions people ask
The rule of '100 minus age in equity' is a rough start, but goals matter more than age. A 50-year-old with retirement 15 years away and a child's fees 2 years away needs two different mixes for two pots. Allocate per goal, by the years left.
Once a year, or when the mix drifts more than about five percentage points from the plan. Rebalancing sells some of what has grown and buys what has lagged, keeping risk at the level you chose. Taxes and exit loads apply to sales, so rebalance with fresh SIPs where you can.
Because they do not rise in a straight line, and a 30% fall in the year the fees are due cannot be waited out. The glide path trades some expected growth in the last years for certainty on the date.
In the middle years. Aggressive hybrid and balanced advantage funds hold equity and debt inside one scheme and rebalance themselves, which suits a goal five to ten years away.
We show the framework, help you match a mix to each goal and its horizon, set up the SIPs and review the mix against the plan every year. The decision stays yours.
